Kayaking to the Sea Caves at Cape Greco: Which Tour and When?

For most people who want to paddle into the sea caves, the one to book is the 4-hour guided kayaking tour from Limnara Beach: €155 per person, rated 5.0 from 33 reviews on GetYourGuide. It is a private group tour, sit-on-top single kayaks, and the main aim is the Ayia Napa sea caves and the natural arch of Lovers’ Bridge. It costs more than four times as much as a boat cruise, so be sure you want to be in the water rather than past it.

Prices and ratings are those shown on GetYourGuide. All three are small samples, and the two private tours have a few dozen reviews between them.

What you actually do

The first tour starts at Limnara Beach, nearly 3 km east of the Ayia Napa sea caves, and paddles west almost as far as Glyky Nero beach before coming back. The coast is rocky, and the two small sandy beaches on the way are ones kayakers are not allowed to land on. The operator says there are more than five caves, but most are too narrow to enter or too low above the sea. Usually the group goes into two, and one of them has two entrances. The kayaks are single sit-on-top boats of 18 kg, and the load on each must be under 100 kg.

The 5-hour tour adds snorkelling, with a mask and snorkel lent free. It kayaks to the cove known as the Sea Cave Palaces at Cape Greco, then snorkels to the Ayia Napa caves if the sea is good, and the guide uses a big buoy. The operator is frank that the Cape Greco caves are too shallow to enter by kayak: you admire the cove from the water.

The third tour paddles east of Cape Greco, with Konnos beach and the natural arch known as Kamara tou Koraka.

When it runs

This is the detail that matters most. Between November and April, the Ayia Napa sea caves are off limits to protect the breeding Mediterranean monk seals, according to the operator, and the 5-hour tour is offered from 15 May to 31 October. The 4-hour tour’s own description says the operator runs a separate 3-hour trip to the Cape Greco caves cove that can go ahead all year. That trip is not one of the three listed here, so ask the operator about it. In choppy water the operators offer an alternative route around the east coast, or cancel if that is rough too.

Who is excluded

The listings are firm, and you should believe them.

  • Non-swimmers, on the first two tours.
  • People with heart problems or mobility impairments, on the first two tours.
  • Anyone over the weight limit. The first tour lists people over 100 kg as not suitable.
  • Children under sixteen on the private 5-hour tour. The first tour does not state a minimum age, so ask.
  • People prone to seasickness, on the first tour.
  • Pregnant women and people with back problems on the 5-hour tour.

You will get wet, so leave anything salt water would damage at the hotel. Swimwear, towel, water and water shoes are what the operator asks you to bring.

Getting there

No paid transport is included. The operator says that in most cases it can give you a free ride in its own company car from Ayia Napa or Protaras. Do not assume that: confirm it when you book.

Boat or kayak?

On a Blue Lagoon cruise you pass the caves and Lovers’ Bridge from the deck and swim at a stop, for €35 and without the effort. On a kayak you go inside the caves. Whether that is worth €120 more is a matter of how much you like to paddle.

Which one to book

  • Most people, May to October: the 4-hour guided tour at €155.
  • You also want to snorkel: the private 5-hour tour at €180, if nobody in the group is under sixteen.
  • A different stretch of coast: the East Cape Greco private tour at €155. Its listing is short, so read the booking page for the exclusions.
  • November to April: ask the operator about the Cape Greco alternative before you book.
